Malahide Cricket Club Lost By 30 Runs

Match report The U13B's couldn't have had a much tougher start to their 2011 League Campaign. Clontarf are by some distance the strongest U13 Panel in Leinster this year with their A Team hot favourites to win the U13 All Ireland title and their B team considered likely winners of the B League. This years' U13B side for Malahide is a very young team with most of the side having played in the U11's last year. Still it's always good to play against strong opposition and it was good for the younger boys especially, to see what the standard of cricket will be like this season.
Having won the toss, Clontarf decided to have a bat and it was soon clear to see the logic in their decision. Their openers really "teed off" at a rate of about 8 or 9 runs an over and despite an early morning start the recent dry weather meant that the ball travelled very quickly across the outfield. It was a great credit to the Malahide boys that they didn't lose heart and they chased every ball very hard . A change of bowling led to a significant slowing of the run rate and it was an excellent effort by Sean Drumm and Riley Shoebridge to limit the scoring of two batsmen who were very well set. Eventually the Clontarf openers were both retired (at U13B level batsmen are retired when they score more than 24 runs), with 2 new batters at the crease Malahide took their opportunity to re-establish some control. Almost immediately Ethan Bannon ran out the Clontarf number 3 with an excellent direct hit and this was quickly followed by Riley Shoebridge flattening the middle stump of the number 5. Malahide continued to bowl well and their was some excellent overs from Gavin Dalton, Tommy Friel, Ryan Condron , Ravi Golappoli and David O'Halloran. Clontarf finished their 20 overs on 139 for 7 , a big score but at least 40 runs less than had looked likely after 7 or 8 overs.
With such a big target to chase it was important that Malahide kept up with the run rate but also kept wickets in hand. The openers , Cian Reid and Scott Talbot did an excellent job and managed to keep the scoreboard "ticking over". When Scott was caught for 12, Kyle McEneay came to the crease and with a misture of solid defence and going after the bad ball he continued the good work. Against a very strong bowling line up both Cian and Kyle were particularly impressive . Cian was eventually retired on 28 which enabled Ethan Bannon to come in an hit a few "lusty blows", after hitting 4 boundaries in quick succession he was caught at point going for his 5th. Kyle and Ryan Condron continued to add to the score but Malahide were always behind the required rate. The Malahide innings eventually finished on 109 for 4 , 30 runs short but a great effort by the boys nonetheless.
It's always disappointing to lose but I think that the team learnt alot from playing so well against such a strong team and they should definitely take alot of pride from their performance which will give them confidence for the rest of the season.
