Fitzy’s Fireflies v Tarbox Troopers (Development XI Friendly)
On a crystal clear afternoon, the future and the distant past collided at Lady Acre, as Malahide commenced its selection academy for the Development T20 World Championships.
With a large slice of gamesmanship, the Troopers moved the goalposts several times before a ball was bowled, but the message was clear for the Fireflies, concentrate on the task at hand and fight them on the creases, wherever that may be!
Fitz lost the toss and Tarbox elected to bowl, however Mark Doyle would soon have them regretting that decision with a stunning maximum, ably supported by Sean Burke. Kate Fitz and Margot Troupe kept the scoreboard ticking over until Lucas Thornes delivered a fantastic display of shot making with another retirement.
The Hardings added vital runs either side of a rather sinister chapter, as No Mercy Mo smashed a young gun for 12 and the gloves were most certainly off! Toby Doyle and Farham exacted sweet revenge for their colleague, combining to catch Mo behind!
With balls running out Skip Fitz and Brian T had to make hay while the sun shone and they scampered 23 not out between them leaving a target of 131 to win. To be fair to Tarbox, he twice declined the opportunity to run Fitz out with direct hits - what an absolute gentleman ??
Mark and Sean kicked off the bowling and soon had an opener walking, however despite being caught on his first ball, Toby settled himself to run up a beautiful 20 - no bragging rights in the Doyle household tonight!
Oscar Mc delivered a sumptuous knock to race to a maximum and the Fireflies sparkle began to wain! However a fantastic spell from Margot T revived their luminescence by taking the next 3 wickets, the first caught by Mo Daddy at full sprint!
There were controversial scenes as Fitz was denied 2 clear wickets - the first a pinpoint runout and the second a catch off a “no ball”, whatever that is ??
When Ramin delivered an exhibition of boundaries it seemed like a tall order for the Fireflies, but who could have predicted what would happen next!
Doc Dodds repeatedly smashed a young firefly to the boundary to resounding boos from the assembled crowd. He then swiftly shepherded young Langan to an outrageous runout with a wildly misplaced call, leaving just him and GT to bat, with Mike already on 16.
Surely an impossible situation, especially as the Doc raced to 19, but while many play checkers, the Dodds-Tarbox axis play chess ?. To be fair they used every ounce of their cricket IQ to keep Graeme on strike, including a complete refusal to run a perfect single and a highly questionable half volley for a sneaky leg bye.
Miraculously, it looked like they would escape to victory with GT on strike and needing just 5 to win. However, blood is thicker than water, and when Thornes Snr tempted Graeme to swing for the rafters, who was there to snatch it on the boundary, only Thornes Jnr.
The ground erupted in applause, heartfelt joy and familial harmony not usually seen until Christmas morning enveloped Lady Acre. The emotional scenes at the end will live long in the memory, although this reporter for one, could not see anything through the avalanche of tears ??.
Many thanks to all that participated and helped organise a fantastic day’s sport and delicious teas, especially the Tarbox-Dodds Axis; Hunter for umpiring and JD and KL for scoring.
The future is bright; the past - less so, but at least we live to fight another day.

A Safety Message and Lost Keys
Please be reminded that children should not be brought along to senior nets practice. This is for health and safety reasons.
Furthermore we ask that children are not brought to matches unless they are under the constant supervision of a non-playing adult. Children wandering on to the pitch is dangerous and we would to see a child get injured.
On another note, a set of keys has been misplaced, if these have been picked up, then please hand them in at the bar.
