Malahide Retain the LP Hughes Cup

13 Jun 2023

On a glorious early June Saturday afternoon in Castle Avenue Malahide defeated old rivals Clontarf by 6 wickets to retain the LP Hughes Cup. This is the second year of the trophy and commemorates former International Podge Hughes who played starring roles for both teams in past times.  At the inaugural fixture last year it was agreed that the trophy would be awarded each season at the first red ball league game between the two clubs.  Clontarf President Susan Bray presented the Cup to the winning captain James Newland.

Also, on the same afternoon, Clontarf Chair Dell McGeehan officially unveiled a marble plaque which renamed the Killester End as the LP Hughes End at a ceremony between innings to mark the huge esteem for the late Podge Hughes.   A number of past players who would have played with and against Podge attended including John Nolan, Rossa Bunworth, Fergus Carroll, Deryck Vincent (Clontarf) and Alan Hughes, CD Smith and John Morgan (Malahide).
