5ths outgunned by Adamstown 4ths

28 May 2018

The 5th XI came up against a strong, disciplined Adamstown 4th XI.  Batting first, Malahide battled hard against testing bowling.  Graeme Tarbox made an assured 19 at the top of the innings and Elliot Manks a well-judged and forceful 22 in the middle order.  The Adamstown captain, though, ripped out the heart of the Malahide innings in a five-wicket haul.  Only Howard Askew with a masterful, maiden Malahide fifty really wrestled control from their attack.

Chasing 135 to win, Adamstown openers established a 50-run partnership despite an impressive and ill-rewarded opening spell of hostile bowling from Matthew Jeffrey-Carrick and excellent line and length from Oliver Manks.  Matthew J-C made the break through with a marvellous direct hit from cover and then the balance shifted more in favour of the bowling attack.  Wickets fell to Howard Askew and Danny O'Brien.  Adam Doyle produced a fine spell of probing off-spin that gave him figures of 2 for 13.  Dan Read and Bala Vasudevan were unlucky not to get in amongst the wickets.

In the end, Adamstown reached the target with 5 wickets to spare.  In defeat, Malahide should take consolation in a spirited performance, underlined by some excellent fielding and wicket-keeping (Brian Thornes), and in the performance of its youth players, all aged 16 and under, who comprised more than half the side.
