5ths lose out to Cabinteely in tight match at St Andrew's College

Even by recent standards, a particularly youthful 5th XI put in a terrific performance to run a strong Cabinteely 1st XI very close earlier today in their temporary home at St Andrew's College, Booterstown. Invited to bat first, Malahide made an excellent 176 for 3 in their 40 overs based largely around terrific knocks from Dave Symmons (54) and David O'Halloran (71) with some assistance from 32 wides bowled by our hosts. Faced with an uncut outfield that gave no value for ground shots , David O'H played brilliantly ( which to be honest is his normal benchmark) and demonstrated his usual mix of skill and patience allied to a natural acceleration once he went past 50. The final few overs of the Malahide innings saw a couple of nice cameos from Alex Davies and Zac Woods-Oliver which pushed the score upto a decent total.

Even with 176 on the board we knew that Cabinteely's collection of IPL hitters would fancy their chances with the small boundaries at St Andrew's. However, a superb opening spell from Suhaib Naseem had Cabinteely on the back foot as he took 3 quick wickets backed up by some excellent catching. The match situation would have been even better for Malahide had a huge edge off Alex's bowling to Cormac Burke behind the stumps been given , unfortunately the batsman who was on 0 at the time went onto make a crucial 30 !!! We took a 4th wicket through John Burke who was playing his first cricket match for over a year, assisted by a terrific running boundary catch from Alex Davies. The hosts then had a very good 5th wicket partnership that pushed them towards their target. However, an excellent spell of bowling from Ryan Condron including 2 crucial wickets put Malahide right back in the game . With big hitters all the way down the order, Cabinteely's number 9 eventually got them over the line with 3 overs to spare.

Another good performance from the 5ths, this time with 6 youth players in the side, David O'Halloran and Alex Davies are high quality cricketers who should both be playing higher than the 5ths, Ryan Condron and Zac Woods-Oliver will soon be playing in the higher teams and the Burke Cousins, John and Cormac were excellent on their debuts in adult cricket.
