4ths finish season in style with comprehensive victory over YMCA 4s.

14 Sep 2014

On Saturday Morning as the 4th XI prepared to leave for Claremont Road and the 2nd's got ready for their 20/20 match also against YM, a few of Malahide's more experienced players tried to remember the last victory over a YMCA sde, there certainly haven't been many in recent years, so to win 2 out of 2 on the final weekend of the season was a great performance from both sides.
On yet another warm September afternoon in Sandymount, a confident YMCA team won the toss and decided to have a bat. When they had reached 57 for 0 it looked like they had made the correct decision and Malahide were in for 45 overs of very hard Yakka. The game changed with the entry of "Old Golden Arm" Martin Nicoll into the bowling attack who removed one of the YM openers with the assistance of a fantastic catch by Zak Woods-Oliver. Suddenly scoring runs became very difficult and with Riley Shoebridge taking a break from keeping to bowl his left arm spin , Malahide bagan to take a firm hold on the match. Assisted by some good fielding (Sean Drumm and Dave Symmons both took good catches),  Martin and Riley worked their way through the YM batting line up taking 9 wickets between them,(Martin Nicoll 9-0-45-5, Riley Shoebridge 9-3-16-4). When Inder Singh took the final wicket,YMCA were all out for 118 and with over 12 overs of their 45 unused, a really fantastic effort from Malahide in the field.
After a great curry for tea ( the best tea of the season arrives on the final weekend of the season), Malahide openers, Chris Long and Inder Singh set off like they had a train to catch at 5.30pm, Playing some great shots they raced to 95 before Chris was bowled having reached an excellent 50. There were a few jitters as Malahide lost some quick wickets to the YM spinners but the game had been won by that stage and when Steve Twaddell hit the winning runs there were still 17 overs to spare.
All in all a really good performance from the lads, they have had a good season and have been well led by "The Mighty Quinn", by finishing the season with 2 really good wins the 4ths can look back on a decent Summer. It's worth noting that the 4ths finished with more bonus points than any other team in the division (more than twice the amount of League winners Leinster 4ths), when they won they won well and when they lost they always scrapped for everything.
