The Fifths were comprehensively beaten in the first round of the Minor Cup by a very strong Tyrrelstown 2nd XI. A stand of 155 by the opposition's batsmen 3 and 4 effectively killed the game.
Geoff Read's controlled opening spell of 2 for 30 and Danny O'Brien's (2 for 35) intelligent changes of pace later on were the pick of the bowling performances. Dan Read was unlucky not to capture a wicket in a fiery spell. Eric Lacey's energetic fielding, Brian Thornes's keeping and a fine catch in the deep from Geoff Read gave the team heart despite the batting onslaught.
Our batsmen had a mountain to climb and the pressure of the run rate and accurate bowling took their toll. A cultured 21 not out from Danny O'Brien was the highlight of the Malahide innings.
Thanks to Robert Dickinson for keeping a score book that makes for some difficult reading for the home side.
