Fifths fall just short

19 Jun 2019

In a well-fought game against Pembroke, the 5th XI fell 6 runs short of recording a first victory of the season.  Our bowlers and fielders worked hard to put pressure on the Pembroke batsmen and leaving them on 153 for 8 after 40 overs.  Geoff Read's outstanding opening eight-over spell gave him 2 wickets for just 8 runs.  Paul Devine (3 for 32) removed the middle order.  Matthew Clarke, Suhaib Naseem and Aaron Doyle gave little away and took a wicket each, while James Dickinson and Bala Vasudevan were unlucky not to be rewarded for fine bowling.

Malahide, lead by Jack Grant (41), began the chase confidently and at drinks we were well-placed on 70 for 1.  After that runs became harder to come by and, as the pressure built, wickets fell.  Matthew Clarke fought on with a forceful 26.  Suhaib Naseem hit the last (and his first) ball for 6 and left us all pondering what might have been.  Defeat was ill reward for the team's effort and commitment.

Thanks to Adam Doyle for scoring.
