The U15 boys played their first game in the modified B League against a strong Adamstown team. Fielding first Malahide received a quick lesson in what it's like to have just ten players on a lightning quick outfield. The need to bowl straight and full was recognised quickly by Eoghan Keohane who struck with 2 quick wickets. Other bowlers had less success as the Adamstown middle order began to dominate. Fine spells in the second half of the innings by Zohaib Shahid (3 for 21 - including a sharp catch by Mathew Clarke) and Rohit Upadhyay (1 for 17) helped wrest control back to Malahide, but the total of 151 was a formidable target.
Our response started well. Openers Adam Doyle (37) and Jack Grant (36) kept up with the run rate. Once they retired, however, Adamstown's accurate bowling subdued the Malahide middle order, with only James Dickinson (16) able to counter-attack. A last gasp partnership featuring Oliver Jeffrey-Carrick's quick running and a couple of hefty blows from Finn Doran was not quite enough and Malahide fell 11 runs short.
While there were some bright moments of fielding, with Raj Upadhyaya and Oliver stopping certain boundaries, the boys were left to rue the cost of some unforced errors and short-pitched bowling. But overall the team showed enough promise to suggest the result can be different in the matches to come.
