Junior A girls snatch victory from Phoenix

04 Jun 2018

A beautiful Sunday morning on the top pitch seemed to suit Phoenix' batters as they scored a whopping 155 runs with the loss of only one wicket. Malahide girls knew they had to scramble for every run but when we lost our opening batters in the first two overs the result looked ominous. Gemma Devally then hit a quick 3 boundaries before going out lbw and Juliette Evans Garrett steadied the game with  a couple of sixes and a few fours, retiring on 32. Katie Brophy never let a run pass her by, making a well earned 15 before being bowled out. Aoife Mitchell had a very confident innings with a couple of boundaries and was unlucky to be caught after 14 runs. By now the score was creeping up and with Beth Deacon retiring on 30 Malahide only needed  5 runs to win but only had 1 over left. Another wicket fell and so it was down to our last two batters Saibh Mitchell and Kate McKenna to bring home the win with one ball to spare. Tense, exciting, down to the wire. The girls showed great determination and nerves of steel to win the match.
