Lessons to learn for 5ths at Trinity

21 May 2018

The 5th XI game against Dublin University 3 ebbed and flowed, but mostly ebbed away from Malahide.

Opening bowlers Howard Askew (1-9) and Matthew Jeffrey-Carrick were probing and miserly tying up Trinity's batsmen.  Dan Read continued to apply the screws while Ryan Condron attacked, taking two wickets.  Bala Vasudevan and Paul Devine took 2 wickets each.  But 3 dropped catches and some lackadaisical fielding let the side down.  When Chris Deacon claimed the two final wickets in a deadly four-ball Trinity had reached 157 which seemed at least 30 runs too many.

After a slow start openers Bala (15) and Graeme Tarbox (21) provided the basis for an attack, but a regular fall of wickets meant the target slipped further away.  A run-a-ball 9th wicket partnership between Paul (8*) and Howard (25*) ensured valuable bonus points and provided a glimpse of what might have been, ensuring the loss when it came was by a mere 22 runs.
