An early Sunday morning start for the U13C Boys team visiting Knockharley for a return fixture to try to avenge the defeat to the same team at home a week or so previously. The U13C team were also hungry for a win following the losses suffered by our U13 A & B teams earlier in the weekend.
Under the shrewd captaincy of Oscar McCormack, Malahide won the toss and put the home side in to bat first. With showers sweeping across the ground at regular intervals our bowlers performed superbly. Despite their big-hitting openers finding the boundary on several occasions, our team starved their middle order of runs and an overall excellent fielding performance and accurate bowling, particularly from Beth, Abby & Katie kept their total to 80 for the loss of 4 wickets.
Our batsmen also played superb cricket, all the pairs scored runs and protected their wickets. Some excellent calling and quick running at every opportunity kept the scoreboard ticking over and kept us on target and almost equal with the required rate all the way through the match. Things were set for a thrilling finish as dark thunder clouds gathered around us in the Meath countryside.
When James Corroon and James Dickinson came to the crease as the last pair, runs were needed and we needed to preserve wickets. However, both James's were out caught to excellent catches in the field, but both continued to score to keep our net total close to the required rate. Needing 2 to win with three balls to go, James Dickinson clipped one off his legs for a precious boundary which left him just needing to block the last two balls to clinch victory by just 3 runs.
Our team played excellently throughout and thoroughly deserved to win. Great team spirit between our girls and boys made the match a pleasure to watch for both sides. No man of the match here - but rather a round of applause and a pat on the back for the entire team as one unit.
Special mention to Knockharley who welcomed us so warmly, played with great fairness and showed tremendous sportsmanship in applauding our victory in this nail biting and evenly balanced encounter.
Thanks also to Knockharley for your generous hospitality to our team and our traveling supporters with a lovely spread at the end of the game.
