After a couple of disappointing performances, the boys U13As demonstrated real spirit and character against a strong and well-organised YM XI. Malahide’s bowlers kept things tight and were supported by good, solid fielding exemplified by Elliot’s two catches at point and two further catches by Wilhelm and Mathew. Daniel’s faultless keeping that meant not a single bye eluded him. All the Malahide fielders made sure they got their body as well as their hands behind the ball. Alex, Josh, Oliver M and Wilhelm each took wickets, ably supported by Ellis, Mathew, Oliver J-C, and Zohaib, as YM reached 127 off 20 overs.
Malahide made sure their wicket wouldn’t come cheaply. Oliver M, Elliot and Daniel reached double figures and Alex would surely have joined them had injury not stopped him. Wilhelm retired on 30. But while we batted well, we just couldn’t score quickly enough against a well-disciplined attack.
The score book shows Malahide lost by 37 runs, but that figure doesn’t tell the whole story. The boys should be proud of the way they competed and take their restored confidence into the next matches.
