The depth of the Development XI squad was revealed in Sunday’s encounter with Rush with the addition of new team members Mark Deacon, Ronan Furlong, Isobel McCormack, Sofia Hilmi, Oliver Jeffrey-Carrick, Cory O’Conghaile, Tony O’Connor, Graeme Tarbox, and Brian Thornes to join ‘regulars’ Aidan and Paul Devine and Chris Deacon. Batting first Rush posted a challenging 143 despite impressive spells from Isobel (3 wickets for 23) and Cory (2 for 4) with Paul, Ronan and Mark taking a wicket apiece. The senior members of the team rolled back the years, with Graeme giving a master class in athletic fielding. Sofia and Cory were excellent behind the stumps.
Rush’s total was always challenging, but a composed 13 from Ronan and a skilful 23 from Graeme laid the basis for Malahide’s run chase. Fighting injury, but scarcely needing the runner he’d requested, Mark hit powerfully with four sixes in his 42. Unfortunately the impetus was lost after he retired and despite the efforts of Oliver, Brian, Cory and Isobel Malahide fell just 23 runs short.
Thanks to all who took part and the many who supported. The Development League is aimed at introducing young players (boys and girls) to adult cricket and provides an opportunity for adults to return to the game and offer the benefit of their experience. Over the season we intend to give a game to all who make themselves available. Dates of future fixtures are on the website.
