Malahide players shine in Leinster Schools Senior Cup Victory

19 May 2016

Malahide's Cameron Shoebridge skippered St Andrew's College to their 3rd successive Senior Cup Title in an exciting match against a very strong C.U.S side at Merrion CC earlier this week. Having won the toss and choosing to have a bat, St Andrew's set a very good total of 194 for 9 in their 40 overs. Initially it appeared that C.U.S would make easy work of reaching the target as Rush 1st teamers, Stephen Doheny (who had turned down a thoroughly deserved selection for The Leinster Lightening in order to play in the Schools Cup Final) and Dean Brogan reaching 100 without loss at the 20 over mark. However, shortly after the drinks break Stephen was run out for 63 going for a needless 2nd run. The next 12 overs yielded only another 25 runs for the loss of 4 more wickets as St Andrew's established a firm grip on the match. Cameron bowled an excellent 10 over spell (3 for 33) that put a brake on C.U.S's early momentum. As the run rate climbed, wickets continued to fall with C.U.S being all out in the 40th over for 165, giving the holders victory by 29 runs. Malahide's Riley Shoebridge (who took 4 wickets in the Semi Final against Ardgillan College earlier in the week) and SJ De Klerk (the only 1st year selected for either of the 2 squads) also featured for St Andrew's. It was a disappointing day for Malahide's David O'Halloran who was on the C.U.S team but such was the quality in both teams they will have more finals to play in over the next few years.
