5ths Fall to Phoenix at Final Fence within 5 Balls of Victory

Playing in glorious sunshine, for the most part, the Fifths took on Phoenix V today In the Division 12 opener. Losing the toss they were put in to bat. Maybe expecting too much from the fertile (sic) opening pair of Mark Duffy (40) and Conor Herbert (out for 14 when he just as he was starting to score freely), they never really managed to accelerate at any point. Valuable contributions from Chimney Kadam (25), Ben Askew (25) & Ryan Condron (24), saw them total 167-9 after 40 overs.

167 would have been par on the old mat and was close to on the new. The bowling performance matched the batting. Some promising highlights from Dan Read (2-25) and Geoff Read (2-11 including 4 maidens). But despite going to the final over, missed catches, wides and the odd fielding lapse meant the win fell through the finger tips and failure followed.
