Match report
Whelan Cup Final 2012
Malahide IV v Leinster V at Railway Union CC on Sunday 15th July 2012
Despite having lost to Leinster twice in the league, confidence was high in the Malahide dressing room as we prepared to take the field on winning the toss. Our customary opening pair of Howard and Conor Gibbons took the new ball. After a solid start from the Leinster openers Howard made the first breakthrough when he induced an off-side waft from McMahon who nicked a regulation catch to Alan Quinn behind the stumps. In the very next over the Leinster skipper Makwana decided to take on the evergreen Gibbons but only succeeded in picking out Conor Herbert at long on.
The Leinster opener Keyzer Khan and Nagesh consolidated for a while before Keyzer started to unleash havoc, hitting sixes to the short boundary beside the bowling green. When Howard (1-40) and Gibbons (an impressive 1-24) finished their four over spells Inderjit and Mark Duffy took over bowling duties. After a short rain break Duffy snared his first victim when Nagesh charged down the track to be deceived by the doosra and stumped by Quinner.
In Herberts first over Ahmed chipped a six to the short extra cover boundary. Conor however is made of stern stuff and he exacted revenge when the same batsman lofted an outside edge to Johnny Brogan at cover point. Next over the Duffy-Quinn axis accounted for Kenealy with another stumping, but it was becoming increasingly obvious that Keyzer was the key man. Duffy picked up a third wicket (finishing with 3-21) and then in the last over Inderjit Singh denied Keyzer what would have been a deserved century when he snicked behind to give Quinner a fourth victim. Still, his 90 out of a final total of 154 for 7 looked like being the key contribution of the final.
The first ball of our reply did not increase confidence among the sizeable Malahide support, when Desmond Horstmann mistimed a drive to be caught at point off Mullen. Needing to score at ten an over Inderjit and Herbert scored briskly, putting on 46 in four eight-ball overs. When Herbert (23) skied one into the covers to give Chaudhary his first wicket, Malahide were back in the game.
John Brogan took up where Herbert had left off. With the team’s score on 67 Inderjit holed out for 27, which brought Oisin Taylor to the crease. If anything the tempo picked up even more, when the two “young guns” began to set about making short work of what was a challenging total. Oisin immediately took the innings by the scruff of the neck, playing with no fear and treating the Malahide fans to an exhibition of clean hitting, mostly down the ground. Johnny B was by no means in the shadows and he responded to Oisin’s arrival by playing even more shots. The momentum had now swung decisively in Malahide’s favour, and there was no way the Leinster attack could stop the Malahide lads’ march to glory. It only remained for a few scampered ones and twos and a boundary through the legside to bring up Johhny’s half century off the last ball of the 13th over and the seventeen year wait for another Whelan Cup glory was over.
Oisin Taylor (48 not out) deservedly (just about!) edged the man of the match award from Johnny B (50*), but credit is also due to Herbert and Inderjit for their batting efforts, and all the bowlers particularly Duffy and Gibbons. Bob Chambers, Koushik CS and Desmond Horstmann fielded manfully in the deep and Howard skippered the team with his usual quiet authority and nous. Mention must also be made of those who had helped us to the final, including Clare Shillington, Mary Waldron, Anton Weir and Stephen Rubbathan. Thanks must go to all the vocal and enthusiastic supporters and to fast bowling legend Pete Saville for scoring on the day.

Malahide IV 155 for 3, 13 overs (J Brogan 50*, O Taylor 48*, I Singh 27, C Herbert 23)
