The Hills v Malahide Cricket Club Junior Boys on Thu 11 Aug 2011 at 2.00pm
Malahide Cricket Club Won by 2 runs
Match report
This was one of the best games of cricket that I have seen at any level for quite a while and in a Cup Final as well. It had everything, a last ball finish, huge 6's, great catches , high drama and all played in a fantastic spirit.Having won the toss Malahide chose to bat and the openers Cameron Shoebridge (35no, including a remarkable flat 6) and Cian Reid (26) did a fantastic job in setting a good foundation for a big total. When Cameron was retired ,Luke Birrell came in and ensured that the tempo was maintained, unfortunately he was run out for 18 attempting a quick single. Andrew Jackson(21) was promoted up the order and proceeded to hit some lusty blows particularly to the leg side boundary. When Andrew was bowled aiming for "cow corner", the 2 whippets of the team, Sean Drumm and David O'Halloran ensured that Malahide set a challenging total of 116 in their 20 overs.
The Hills openers got off to a steady start but accurate bowling from Andrew Jackson (2 for 7) and Cian Reid (2 for 17)kept the scoring in check. When both openers were dismissed by the 6th over, Malahide were confident in perhaps wrapping up a quick victory. However, The Hills batsmen had other ideas, they had successfully chased a total of 135 against Terenure in the Semi-Final so they always felt they were in the game. As The Hills kept up with the run rate, the Malahide bowling became a little bit ragged and the number of wides was keeping The Hills in the game. The game swung back Malahide's way when Riley Shoebridge(1 for 16) bowled their dangerous number 3 batsman. Malahide continued to take wickets including a couple of excellent run outs but the tenacious Hills batting line up kept their team in the game. The game then swung back in favour of The Hills when their youngest player hit a huge 6 over the trees on the downslope boundary. If Malahide were to win now they needed some excellent "death bowling" and man of the match Andrew Jackson provided it in the 19th over, taking a wicket and conceeding only 3 runs. Cameron bowled the last over leaving The Hills needing 4 for victory off the last ball, they managed only a single and Malahide had won a fantastic game by 2 runs.
