Match report With such a short fixture list for the U13B's , it was great to get a friendly organised against a strong Leinster side on what was a very warm Saturday Morning in Rathmines. Having won the toss Captain Ryan Condron asked Leinster to have a bat. With a lightening quick outfield and fairly short boundaries it was clear that runs would be easy to score unless the bowling was on the money.So far this season , the U13B's have bowled much better than they have batted and Malahide kept up the high standards with a very mature performance against an experienced Leinster batting line up. Pick of the bowlers were Scott Talbot who bowled an amazing spell that gave him figures of 3 for 1 and Ryan Condron who took the Captain's responsibilty of opening the bowling and returned figures of 1 for 6. In all Malahide used 9 bowlers all of whom did an excellent job. The bowling was backed up by another good fielding display with plenty of fine stops in the outfield. Special mention should go to Luka Kinzel who on his debut for the U13B's made 3 or 4 great stops and Riley Shoebridge who showed alot of bravery making a diving stop that prevented a certain 4 that resulted in a very bruised hand. At one point it looked likely that Malahide would restrict Leinster to a score of under 100, but some good hitting and running from the 10th wicket pair left us chasing a total of 120.
In reply, Malahide had to make a quick start to keep up with the run rate. Opener Sean Drumm had his best innings of the season so far making a very brisk 24 and hitting 5 boundaries. Batting at number 3 , Gavin Dalton kept the momentum going scoring 26 (inc 5 boundaries) before being retired. By mid innings Malahide were well up with the run rate and Tommy Friel did a great job in the middle order to keep the scoreboard ticking. However, as so often happens in cricket, one fantastic over by Rory Corcoran, the Leinster leg spinner , changed the whole momentum . Flighting the ball beautifully he bowled a 2 wicket maiden and showed the Malahide batsmen that if you don't move your feet against the spinners you will be in all sorts of trouble. After this set back though Malahide didn't panic and John Burke, Kyle McKeaney and Ryan Condron determinedly set out to make sure that the good start didn't go to waste. Just when it looked like Malahide were going to stroll past the winning total, Kyle was bowled for 9, leaving the dynamic due of Ryan Condron and Riley Shoebridge with the task of scoring 5 to win whilst preserving the final wicket. Ryan and Riley met mid pitch and decided on a strategy of no silly singles and to wait for the bad ball, needless to say the first thing they did was to run a bye even though the ball went directly to the long stop fielder. Somehow they made it and the very next delivery was the wide long hop they had been looking for and Riley gleefully despatched it to the boundary.
To have successfully chased 120 with nearly 2 overs to spare was a great effort by the lads even if in the end with 9 wickets down it was a little too close for comfort.
