U15A's snatch dramatic Tie in the Cup.

07 Jul 2014

If ever a match summed up the "ebbs and flows" of cricket then it was this one, on several occasions Malahide looked dead and buried, not least when Terenure tied the scores with 2 wickets and over 7 overs remaining, but cometh the hour and all that as team skipper Ryan Condron took the last 2 wickets in 2 balls with the help of excellent catches from Cormac Burke and Lukas Keegan (via a rebound from the keeper). Ryan finished with superb figures of 5 wickets for 14 runs in 6.4 overs and bowled his legspin with great control and flight throughout his spell.
The day began with Malahide winning the toss and deciding to bat, openers Riley Shoebridge and David O'Halloran put on 35 before DO'H played on for a stylish 21. Riley then held the innings togther and batted very well whilst wickets continued to fall at the other end. When he was out for 32 the Malahide innings fell away as their spinners seemed to mesmorise a succession of batsmen and only a few lusty blows from Scott Talbot (who only arrived at the ground as the 9th wicket went down) got the total upto 93. Against a decent Terenure batting lineup the total felt about 20 or 30 runs short but an excellent opening spell from Scott and D'OH kept the run chase in check. After the loss of 2 early wickets Terenure consolidated and reached 41 for 2 and looked well set for victory. The introduction of Malahide's spinners then turned the match in their favour, Zak Woods-Oliver and Riley Shoebridge both took a wicket each but it was Ryan Condron's spell that seemed to take Malahide to the brink of victory. Having been comfortable on 41 for 2 Terenure were now on 60 for 8 and the target of 94 appeared to be too many.
In keeping with the rest of the game, the match then took another twist as Sean Lynch from Terenure batted superbly to guide his side toward victory. He hit the bad balls, defended the good ones and always managed to find a single at the end of an over, seriously impressive. However, with the scores tied and the rest of the Terenure players poised on the boundary ready to celebrate victory up stepped Skipper Condron to bring a very memorable match to an end. A great performance by the team who must now travel down south for a replay at some point next week.
