Oh so close for the 5ths.
29 Jun 2014
On a beautifully warm Sunday afternoon the 5th's came as close as possible to claiming another Division 11 win. Even though it was a game we should have won (lots of lessons to be learned) to have come so close against one of the League's stronger teams and playing with a side with 8 youth players was a very good performance. The highlights of the match were an excellent century opening partnership between Mal Ogilvie (52) and Riley Shoebridge (54), his first senior 50, and posting a total of 162 for 9 against some fairly decent bowling. Cabinteely's big hitters looked like making short work of the total but the Malahide bowlers kept chipping away and we took wickets at key moments. The main wicket takers were Howard Askew with 2, Scott Talbot with 3 (for the 2nd match in a row), Ryan Condron with 2 and Mark O'Hara and Sean O'Donohue with 1 a piece. Mark in particular bowled superbly and his return on 1 wicket didn't reflect at all how well he bowled and with even a modicum of luck in his final over he would have won the game for us. A couple of catches went down and Cabinteely's umpires were determined to ignore even the plumbest of LBW's but credit to their 10th wicket pair who saw them over the line despite the pressure. It's never good to lose but the contribution being made by the young players is increasing every week, on Sunday both the leading run scorer and the leading wicket taker are only just 15 which says alot for the young talent in the club.
