Hard lesson for 5ths

15 Jul 2019

The 5th XI travelled to St Columba's College for a game against the league leaders, Leinster.  It was a hot day in the field, but the team worked hard.  The attack was generally tight and Sarvjeet Singh (4 for 28) and Danny O'Brien (3 for 38) bowled beautifully against a team that batted deep.  We took some fine catches, none better than Elliot Manks's effort diving forward at cover point to pick up the ball just millimeters above the grass.  Ronan Furlong, playing his first game of the season, kept soundly. We had Leinster all out for 233.

With an expansive outfield and memories of the week earlier, we knew this was a total we could reach.  Unfortunately, our innings had a terrible start.  We lost a wicket in the first over and then captain Neil Carrick made two calamitous errors of judgement running out both opener Brian Thornes and the club's leading run scorer, Aaron Doyle.  Elliot Manks came in at 11 for 3 and set about restoring some order.  His forceful 23 moved us past 50, but after he fell, the pressure of the experienced bowling attack told and our innings stalled, save for a combative 19 from Bala Vasudevan.  We limped to 103 all out.
