Match report A very enjoyable match played in a great spirit at the home of Swords CC in the beautiful surroundings of Newbridge House in Donabate. If Fingal Council could manage to cut the grass on the outfield a little more regularly it would be a really fantastic venue. On a chilly evening with plenty of dark clouds gathering, Malahide won the toss and chose to have a bat. Against a more than decent Division 9 attack (Malahide 5th's are Division 11) batting was never easy and the "lush" outfield meant that there wasn't much value in anything other than the ariel route. The main contribution came from the evergreen Malcolm Ogilvy who made a well constructed 30 and he and Riley Shoebridge put together a decent partnership of 32. A final total of 66 in 20 overs always looked about 20 below par but with the skies getting darker and batting likely to get harder we knew that a good bowling performance could make it tough for Swords.
Malahide's opening bowlers, Sean O'Donohue (1 for 10 ) and Howard Askew (0 for 13) bowled beautifully and were unlucky not to take more wickets. Richard Wing picked up a couple of wickets but the Swords batsmen knew how to score on their own ground and a couple of hefty blows took them to their target in the 17th over. OK it's disappointing to go out of The Whelan Cup in the first round but this was another decent performance against a team several divisions above us.
