Match report Friday the 1st July was the best evening this season from a weather point of view, but unfortunately not from a cricketing aspect as the Malahide Taverners were crushed by the Terenure Walnuts!

Having won the toss we put them into bat and apart from a couple of lapses our bowling and fielding were reasonably tight with the skipper taking a dive to get a good caught and bowled and just missing out on a hat-trick in the penultimate over. At the halfway stage they looked like they were on for 150, so we were quite pleased when we held them to 117. Although we knew that this was a reasonable score, particularly on this pitch, we were still confident that we could beat them.

We weren’t so confident when the opening batsmen came out with 3 runs instead of their usual 40! At the end of the day we were all out for 93 with nearly 2 overs to go due to some very tricky bowling and inspired wicket keeping. With 4 of our batsmen getting ducks we have to thank Danny Smith (20 no), Rishi Sethia (18 & motm), Mike Shoebridge and Kevin Murphy for saving us from total embarrassment. Despite the fact that 4 of the new members for Terenure came from the rugby club and had South African accents the game was played in the usual Taverners spirit, particularly demonstrated when Andy Heyes walked after being caught behind for a very marginal snick that the umpire didn’t hear. The Terenure captain Eddie Doyle mentioning this in his speech evoked spontaneous applause! Long live the spirit of the Tavs!
